Dr Barnard is one of Newcastle’s more senior anaesthetists, having been involved in anaesthesia for the past 35 years.
His original training was completed at The Royal Newcastle Hospital, and he obtained the FFARACS in 1991, followed by the FANZCA in 1992.
Following his training, Dr Barnard worked as a Staff Specialist with the Westpac Rescue Helicopter at Sydney’s Prince Henry Hospital followed by appointment as a part time Staff Specialist at the John Hunter Hospital in 1991.
He was appointed a VMO in Anaesthesia in both public and private hospitals in Newcastle, a position in which he continues to practice today.
Dr Barnard has a special interest in anaesthesia for the surgical specialties of orthopaedics, faciomaxillary surgery, gastroenterology and urology as well as the areas of perioperative medicine and the management of patients with phobias relating to aspects of anaesthesia.
