Newcastle Anaesthesia and Perioperative Services (NAPS) was created in 2003 and is currently the largest and longest running group practice of Consultant Anaesthetic Doctors in the Hunter Region.
We created NAPS as we had a desire to centralise the activities of the business for our patients, once referred by their Surgeon for surgery. This allowed us to focus on what we see as the more important clinical aspects of providing perioperative care to the patient.
We feel it is important, and we are proud of, our physical space in Morehead Street, Lambton, allowing us to consult in person with our patients as necessary, before and potentially after their episode of anaesthetic care. It provides a comfortable place for our friendly secretarial staff to work both as the point of contact between us and our patients, should their circumstances change prior to a planned procedure, as well as to assist our patients to understand and negotiate the complexities of the Health Insurance Industry as it impacts anaesthetic care.
There is represented in NAPS a significant level of experience in all aspects of modern anaesthetic care, from looking after the smallest paediatric patients to the eldest of our ageing population and all those in between. Within our group we have Anaesthetic Doctors working across all surgical and procedural disciplines, providing safe and professional perioperative care to our patients, our surgeons and each other with advice and assistance at all times.
Beyond our work in the private hospitals surgical services across the region, the Anaesthetists from NAPS work regularly on elective lists and in on-call emergency surgery at all the public campuses of the Hunter New England Local Health Network, including the Calvary Mater Hospital at Waratah. We are involved in the training of future Anaesthetists through our College (ANZCA) processes. We represent Anaesthetic services on the Medical Advisory Committees of a number of the region’s private hospitals. We partake in Anaesthetic and Perioperative research activities and maintain the currency of our skills and knowledge both practically, within the scope of our daily practice, and through regular meetings and learning experiences both locally in Australia and overseas.
Overall the members of NAPS represent a group of motivated, skilled and experienced Anaesthetic Doctors who are ready to provide our patients with the best anaesthetic care possible.
